About Puyallup, WA

The City of Puyallup is situated roughly 10 miles east of Tacoma, and is an easy commute on Sound Transit's Sounder train. The rapidly growing population is estimated to be over 40,000 residents. Events such as the Washington State Fair, the Daffodil Festival and Parade, and the Puyallup Farmers Market pay tribute to the city's agricultural history. Downtown Puyallup and the South Hill Area offer a variety of shopping, dining opportunities, parks, schools, and a modern regional medical center.

In its early years, Puyallup was known for its hops, berries and flowers. It’s first white settlers were part of the first wagon train to cross the Cascades in the 1850s. Ezra Meeker, the town’s first mayor, hop farmer, and inhibitor of Meeker Mansion still present today, platted the townsite and named it after the local Puyallup Tribe of Native Americans, translated as "the generous people". The turn of the 20th century brought change to the valley with the growth of the interurban rail lines connecting Tacoma and Seattle. The Western Washington Fairgrounds were developed giving local farmers a place to exhibit their crops and livestock. Today the Washington State Fair is one of the largest fairs in the country, attracting over 1 million people to Puyallup a year. Puyallup also hosts the annual four-part Daffodil Parade, which takes place every year in Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, and Orting.
