About Spanaway/Parkland, WA
Spanaway is an unincorporated area of Pierce County with a population of over 25,000 residents. It is often identified together with the more urban area Parkland, which lies just Southeast of Tacoma. The two neighborhoods are connected by the main business thoroughfare Pacific Avenue South, which is a north–south road that coincides with State Route 7.
The Hudson's Bay Company, had control of this region until 1863. The company raised cattle, grain, and sheep on the south and east shores of ‘Spanueh Lake,’ today called ‘Spanaway Lake,’ named after the native word spadue, meaning "dug roots." In 1890 the area was renamed "Lake Park" as a planned community and rail line terminus to connect the shore of Spanaway Lake to Mount Rainier National Park, established in 1899. Tourists would take a train to Lake Park, followed by a two-day journey by stagecoach to Mount Rainier, making Spanaway the original "gateway" to Mount Rainier. Although the U.S. Board on Geographic Names recognized the community of "Lake Park '' in 1897, it had shortly thereafter accepted the common name: Spanaway (Spanueh).
